Original Art Under $500: Why Small Paintings Are the Best Place to Start
I want to tell you something that the art world doesn’t always make easy to hear: you don’t need a large budget to own original art. You don’t need to know anything about art history. You don’t need to have visited a gallery. You just need to find something that makes you feel something when you look at it and then buy it before someone else does.
A few years ago, I made a deliberate decision to create a series of smaller works. The reason was simple: I wanted more people to be able to own an original. Not a print, not a reproduction — a painting I made with my hands, that exists only once in the world. These works start at prices that might surprise you.
Owning an original painting is not a luxury reserved for people with large walls and larger budgets. It starts at the size of a paperback book.
What ‘Original’ Actually Means
When I say original, I mean: this painting was made by hand. The brushstrokes, the texture, the exact colour decisions — all of that exists in the physical object and nowhere else.
This is different from a limited edition print, which is a high-quality reproduction made in a set number of copies (say, 50), each signed and numbered. And different again from an open edition print, which has no quantity limit and offers the most affordable way to own an image.
All three are available in my shop. But the originals are something else. They age with you. They reward looking at closely. They change slightly depending on the light. And they tend to appreciate in value over time in a way that prints simply can’t.
My Small Works Series
I started the small works series because I wanted to make original paintings accessible. These are works ranging from approximately 15×15cm to 30×30cm — compact enough to work in a small apartment, on a bookshelf, above a desk, in a hallway, in a bathroom. They feature the same subjects I return to in larger works: birds, flowers, vases, found objects. The same bright colour palette, no neutrals.
But here’s what I’ve discovered about small paintings: they’re often more resolved than large ones. Working at small scale requires every decision to count. There’s no space to hide in a 20×20cm canvas. The colour relationships have to be exactly right. The composition has to hold its own. Small paintings are harder to paint well than they look.
The Best Gift That Fits in a Box
If you’re reading this because you want to give someone a gift — stop searching. An original painting ticks every box that a generic gift doesn’t. It’s personal. It’s unique. It can’t be returned because nothing else exists like it. And it lasts forever.
I offer gift wrapping, handwritten notes, and gift cards for all purchases. For a gift that you genuinely won’t find anywhere else, browse the Originals collection, or get in touch and I’ll help you find the right piece for the person you have in mind.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does an original painting cost?
A: My small works series starts at accessible price points designed to make original painting ownership possible for more people. Prices vary by size and subject. Browse the shop or get in touch for current availability and pricing.
Q: What’s the difference between an original and a print?
A: An original is a unique, hand-painted work that exists once. A limited edition print is a high-quality reproduction made in a fixed numbered run. An open edition print has no quantity cap and is the most affordable option. All are available in my shop.
Q: Do you offer gift wrapping?
A: Yes. All purchases can be gift wrapped with a handwritten note included. Just let me know at checkout or when you get in touch.
Q: How do I hang a small painting?
A: Small works look beautiful grouped together in a gallery wall, or displayed solo on a shelf or ledge. I’m happy to advise on display options for your specific space.
Q: Can I see the painting in my space before I buy?
A: Yes — I offer free room mockups for any work in my shop. Send me a photo of your wall and I’ll put the painting in it so you can see how it looks before committing.
